It was a cold Christmas morning for a then 16-year-old Tom Dant in more ways than one. Tom’s family didn’t have enough money to buy gifts for each other and had no holiday meal to look forward to. Tom remembers the pain he felt about not having the typical Christmas that most people take for granted. A knock at the door came and when Tom opened it, he found someone from one of the local charity groups had left two bags of gifts for his family.
Today as a successful businessman, Tom remembers how thankful he was that someone out there remembered him and his family. From that day forward, Tom never forgot how much of an impact someone’s gesture of help and compassion could have. His entire life has been devoted to helping those around him.
The Gift Of Giving
Whether it’s one of his children, his wife, a coworker or a friend, they’ll all say the same thing about Tom Dant. They’ll say if they could build the perfect person from scratch, it would be Tom. Tom has a reputation as being the most giving and helpful person imaginable among those who know him or have the distinct pleasure of meeting him. Whether it was staying up late to comfort his daughter who was running a high fever the night before he was to speak at a large convention or offering to spend his free time to raise money to feed and clothe the homeless, Tom always finds time to put the needs of others before his own. Things he’s done that may seem like little acts of courtesy have added up to countless people who admire him for his way of positively affecting their lives and inspiring them to pay-it-forward for others. To some, it’s the Golden Rule, to Tom Dant, it’s all in a day’s work.
Paying It Forward
After honorably serving in the Marine Corps during Vietnam, Tom returned home to Maryland where he settled down, married and began raising a family. True to his nature, he continued helping out in the community. Together, Tom and his wife, Valerie, went on to open a coffee house in Washington D.C. that served as a 24 hour outreach program for teens with drug problems and the homeless. Tom’s interest in helping people took him to countries such as the Dominican Republic and Africa where he would help build churches for the local residents, provide food, and hold inspirational sermons. Tom still corresponds with many of the countless people he played an integral part in improving the lives of. For many, these efforts would be exhausting, but when it comes to making someone’s life better, Tom never tires of it.
